Matt Herskowitz – Chopin, Jazz Etudes

Matt Herskowitz  Piano

Uniquely combining the superlative technique of a classical virtuoso with his prowess in jazz and free improvisation, pianist and composer Matt Herskowitz presents a new, cross-genre interpretation of the Chopin Etudes, infusing contemporary jazz language and grooves into the original pieces.

In the tradition of Leopold Godowsky’s “Etudes on the Etudes”, Herskowitz’s Jazz Etudes make Chopin’s masterworks all the more challenging by layering in new rhythmic and harmonic demands in the jazz idiom. With an artful blend of composed music and improvisation, Herskowitz pushes the boundaries of pianistic virtuosity while breaking down the gap between classical and jazz genres.

“[Herskowitz] displays touch, power, artistry, and chops along with a firm grasp of the daring needed for a great performance“— Downbeat Magazine’s “Editor’s Picks”
