Louis Lortie was 10 years old when he discovered Beethoven. Fifty years later — part of a year of festivities surrounding the composer’s 250th birthday — Lortie inaugurated his dazzling full set of Beethoven sonatas in front of enraptured audiences at the Bourgie Hall in Montreal. Though circumstances forced him to continue the series without the captivated crowds, he completed the 32-sonata cycle in the same stunning hall, with passion and dynamism to spare.
“For a long time I wanted to avoid the commonplace of the angry Beethoven, (…) a little cartoonish; I now take on his violent part better, which contrasts with the more tender lyricism that I put forward”
– La Presse.
“This Beethoven cycle […] is a jewel, artfully polished” – Le Devoir.
