Duo Lortie – Mercier

Louis Lortie  |  Piano

Hélène Mercier  | Piano

Long-time friends and collaborators, Canadian pianists Hélène Mercier and Louis Lortie present an uplifting programme of music for two pianos. The concert opens with Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic “Fantaisie-Tableaux” Suite, followed by Arensky’s refined Suite no.1 op.15.

Lortie-Mercier’s musicality shines bright in the evening’s central piece, La Mer by Debussy, in a revealing arrangement for two pianos shaped by a “splendid matching sound” (Le Devoir). The program goes on with Rachmaninoff’s imperious Symphonic Dances in a seldom-heard version for two pianos.

As encore, Mercier and Lortie join at the same instrument to perform Feria from Ravel’s exquisite, creating “a vivid atmosphere with rhythmic acuity and subtle coloring.” (The Washington Post).
